Cleveland Guardians acquire Patrick Bailey from Giants, demote Bo Naylor to Triple-A

The Cleveland Guardians have secured a major defensive upgrade behind the plate, acquiring two-time Gold Glove catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants. In exchange, the Guardians sent left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson and the No. 29 overall pick in this year’s draft to San Francisco. The team also announced that Bo Naylor has been optioned to Triple-A after hitting just .143 with two home runs to start the season.

Bailey, a switch-hitter, has struggled significantly at the plate this season, batting .146 with a .396 OPS and only one extra-base hit—a three-run homer against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 22. However, his defensive prowess remains elite. He leads all catchers with five catcher framing runs this season, even as the Automatic Ball-Strike Challenge System (ABS) is being implemented. The Guardians, known for prioritizing defense behind the plate, have long pursued Bailey and finally struck a deal after opening talks with the Giants over the past week.

Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey, himself a former Gold Glove catcher, made the decision to part with Bailey despite his defensive accolades. The move addresses San Francisco’s lineup struggles—the team has the lowest-scoring offense in the majors. Posey had previously challenged Bailey to focus on leading the pitching staff rather than relying solely on framing metrics. “Honestly, my focus in that conversation was, ‘Patty, first and foremost, your responsibility is to lead the staff,’” Posey told The Athletic in February 2025. “That’s not just framing metrics or how many runners you’re throwing out. It’s truly to lead the staff. That’s where I want his focus to be.”

The deal was finalized during the Giants’ 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night, a game in which Bailey entered as a defensive replacement and helped reliever Caleb Kilian navigate a rocky ninth inning. For the Guardians, the acquisition of Bailey provides a substantial defensive boost while they wait for Naylor to rediscover his form in the minors.
