Ulsan Wales manager Jang Won-jin believes the addition of former Major League slugger Choi Ji-man will transform the team, even if his on-field availability is limited to just two months.
Speaking at Choi’s official signing ceremony at Munsu Baseball Stadium on April 27, Jang emphasized the value of the veteran’s presence beyond mere statistics. “It’s not about the duration—it’s the impact he brings to the team,” Jang said. “Choi will be a symbol for us, elevating the entire club’s image.”

The 35-year-old Choi, who hasn’t played an official game since June 2024, is expected to be available only from July through August before the September rookie draft potentially sidelines him. However, Jang dismissed concerns about the short timeline.
“July and August are the toughest stretch of the season when players are most fatigued physically,” Jang explained. “Having Choi hold the lineup together during that period is invaluable. Even a brief stint with proper performance is enough to make a difference.”

Ulsan, a new franchise, has shown stability in pitching and defense but has struggled offensively. Jang sees Choi as the missing piece. “He’ll anchor the heart of the order, which naturally strengthens the entire batting lineup,” he said.
Perhaps more important is the intangible influence Choi will bring. “His preparation, training habits, and game approach—everything he does is a textbook for our young players,” Jang noted. “He doesn’t need to teach directly. Just watching and learning from him will be a great example.”

The manager confirmed that Choi will be allowed to maintain his personal routines and rehabilitation schedule, even if he only joins the team one or two times per week. “We’ll keep close communication and monitor his progress,” Jang added.
Jang also hinted that Ulsan will continue to welcome overseas-experienced players in the future. “We want to create an environment where these players can challenge themselves again in Korea,” he said.
