Authorities are investigating the death of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke as a possible drug overdose after drug paraphernalia was reportedly found inside the home where he was staying on Monday. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical emergency call around 5 p.m., and according to NBC4, Clarke was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived. An autopsy will determine the official cause and manner of death.
The news sent shockwaves through the basketball community, with the Grizzlies, Clarke’s agency, and NBA commissioner all mourning his loss. “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the Grizzlies said in a statement. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten. We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Clarke had been arrested in Arkansas last month on allegations including speeding, fleeing, and possession of a controlled substance. The Grizzlies forward, known for his energetic play and defensive versatility, had been a key contributor since being drafted in 2019.
