Borja Iglesias celebrates his goal at the Metropolitano.
The goal continues to smile upon Borja Iglesias. The striker from Santiago is finishing the season in red-hot form, closing in on his best-ever goal tally, which he could surpass in the final three Liga matches. “El Panda” has already netted three more goals than last season with Celta and is just one shy of the 15 he scored in his best season with Betis, and three short of his LaLiga record of 18 from the 2018-19 campaign with Espanyol.
To his 14 Liga goals for Celta this season, add two in the Europa League and two in the Copa del Rey, bringing his total to 18 goals — just two fewer than he managed eight years ago with Espanyol (18 in the league and 2 in the cup). The goal that gave Celta their first win at the Metropolitano last Saturday, as Borja delicately lifted the ball over Oblak’s head, marked his third consecutive goal in the last three matchdays. Previously, “El Panda” scored the first of Celta’s three goals against Elche to end a two-month winless streak at Balaídos, and before that he broke a six-game goalless run at La Cerámica, although that goal was not enough to avoid defeat against Villarreal.
It is not the first time this season that Borja Iglesias has scored in three or more consecutive games. Earlier in the campaign, between matchdays three and seven, the Celta forward found the net against Villarreal, Girona, Rayo Vallecano, and Elche in succession.
