Many popular salon treatments can cause serious harm to hair and scalp health. In a recent interview, Dr. Monika Abakelia, a trichologist at the “Doctor Hair” clinic, listed the most dangerous procedures. Chemical perms and carving with aggressive formulas break down disulfide bonds in hair, leading to breakage, loss of elasticity, and dullness. Even modern hair extensions put excessive stress on hair follicles, disrupting nutrient supply and triggering hair loss. Keratin straightening often contains formaldehyde and harsh ingredients, leaving hair brittle, split, and prone to static. Hair botox with silicones offers only temporary visual improvement, and incorrect application worsens damage. Frequent bleaching and coloring (especially with ammonia-based dyes) are also harmful, while lamination can “seal in” existing issues. According to the expert, these procedures account for a significant number of patients seeking help from trichologists. Dr. Abakelia advises visiting a specialist once hair condition worsens—after a thorough diagnosis, the doctor will recommend a tailored treatment plan, which may include injections, laser therapy, or scalp peels. To prevent long-term damage, it’s crucial to choose treatments carefully and prioritize salon safety standards.
